Glass filters are designed to increase computer
user productivity through the reduction of glare, static and lowered
emissions for a wide range of monitor types. Glass filters eliminate
glare through a process of optical interference. If the coating has
an index of refraction smaller than that of the glass, the incoming
light is exactly out-of-phase with the outgoing light waves, and they
cancel each other. Because this interference can work for only one wavelength
(usually yellow-green), reflections tend to be purplish.
Glass filters are often coated with a thin
anti-reflective (AR) substance to reduce glare and reflections. There
are several ways to apply this coating. The glass substrate can simply
be dipped in the anti-reflective coating, or an AR coating can be applied
to the surface of the glass through evaporation or sputtering. Sputtering,
the process used by Sunflex, produces a much more uniform coating over
the entire surface of the glass. In addition, a sputtered coating is
harder and consequently, more durable.
Industry Productivity
Issues
A study financed by the National Institute
of Mental Health found that job satisfaction among office workers declines
in proportion to their use of computer CRTs (or VDTs) with full-time
VDT operators complaining most of physical ailments and unreasonable
workloads. Yet every year more businesses come to rely on computers,
with little consideration given to the fact that the lighting in the
office environment was not designed with computers in mind.
A survey conducted last year on CRT use
by the Data Entry Management Association (DEMA) in Norwalk, Connecticut
found that 60 percent of the respondents cited glare as a major problem
in the work environment. According to a Hewlett-Packard study on productivity
through ergonomic office equipment a 44% increase in productivity of
CRT users resulted when environmental improvements were made. One of
these improvements included installing filters on computer screens to
reduce screen glare and reflection, and increase screen image contrast.
Other issues have to do with static buildup
on CRTs, where operators have to clean them daily to remove the dust;
and radiation "hazards." Although they have gotten much publicity,
studies on effects of radiation from CRTs have produced no industry-accepted
data or documentation.
Filter Benefits Ergonomi Data AB filters reduce screen glare
and improve contrast. Consequently, computer users with monitors equipped
with Ergonomi Data AB filters experience greatly reduced eyestrain and
fatigue. As a result, productivity increases and data is produced with
fewer errors. In addition to improved productivity, computer users also
have improved employee morale and lower absenteeism.
