The fine historic cities in Belgium have much to offer. The buildings tell stories, also in the textures of their walls. These pictures were taken in April and May 1986.
If You want an overview of Liège, You can start walking up the 407 steps to the Citadel. But take it easy, on Your way You will pass the former Béguinage du Saint Esprit, a monastery now changed to an architectural museum. Below is an impression of the constructional quality from the 17th century.

A quite different feeling is created by the elaborate brick building on spacious houses at the "Graslei" in Ghent. These facades let a lot of sun light enlighten the interiors through the lead-framed windows facing the canal.

In Antwerp, a city known for it's harbor, there are also other walls reminding the tourist about hard working people. I took this picture when workers flooded the city in 1:st of May demonstrations. The BD 158 is only one in a long row of harbor machineries.

Talking about Antwerp, it is a city where You can find any state of decay. The wall below was still beautiful when I saw it 21 years ago. Maybe it is touched-up today?
